Johnson Opoku Donkor is the creative director and founder of Jonmmo. He started the formation of this fashion house during his days as a student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana. He always had the knack for fashion during his first year at the university but it was not until his final year that he made the conscious effort to
learn the art of dressmaking. Through constant practice and education via YouTube, he was able to master the art of designing and tailoring. Simple cut contemporary wear with a touch of African and Western inspiration. “Creating ingenious art with fabrics” It is with this motto in mind that Jonmmo continues to strive for ingenuity in fashion.
“Do we need validation?” This is the inspiration behind our collection. We come from a cultural setting where everything one endeavours to do seems to always need to be validated by society. Guess what! They rarely validate and most of the time, they degrade.
Especially if it does not conform to what is already established. As this is the case everywhere in the world, what better way can societie register their displeasure than to insult? With the majority of these words typically being uttered in the local dialects such as Akan, Ewe, Ga, Dagomba just to mention a few. We dare to embrace those insulting and degrading words by simply personifying the old adage, "sticks and stones may break my
bones, but words will never break me" into our collection. By taking away their most potent insults and incorporating them into our everyday wear, we take away that which strengthens them and their stance. YES! Yes, we accept and own every single one of those degrading words.
At the end of the day, we comfort ourselves with the famous words of Paulo Coelho when he advised us not to be intimidated by other people’s opinions for only mediocrity is sure of itself. So let’s take risks and do what we really want to do.
